PFT: Jets bringing in Geno Smith this week

Kevin_Kolb_2012_Rumors_Cardinals_SalaryGetty Images

Kevin Kolb may indeed win a Super Bowl in Buffalo.? If that happens, he?ll likely be carrying a clipboard and not a football.

When news broke more than a week ago of quarterback Kevin Kolb?s deal with the Bills, it was reported that Kolb, who made $20 million in 20 months with the Cardinals, could make a ?maximum? of $13 million over two years in Buffalo.? Sounds like starter money, right?

The truth, as a league source with knowledge of the deal tells PFT, is that the contract ?screams backup.?

Specifically, Kolb is guaranteed to make only $1 million, and the contract has a base value of $6.1 million.? This means that $6.9 million is tied up in escalators and incentives and other factors that likely require Kolb to actually play ? and play well ? to get the money.

Of course, the real details of a contract often gets lost in the shuffle of the intervening news cycles.? The initial reports declared the deal to be worth a ?maximum? of $13 million and the Bills curiously waited more than a week to finalize the deal.? Though the reason for the delay isn?t specifically know, it means that the real value for most media outlets will become a footnote to the ?maximum? of $13 million nonsense that was trumpeted at the time the agreement was struck.

And so, as we explained last week, Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson likely are competing for the same roster spot.? If Jackson goes, the Bills will be out $500,000.? If Kolb goes, they?ll be out $1 million.? It?s a small price to pay for having a fallback plan in place before the draft-day dominoes start to fall.

UPDATE 11:57 a.m. ET:? It?s unclear whether the base value is even $6.1 million.? Apart from a $1 million signing bonus, workout bonuses of $100,000 per year, and base salaries of $1.65 million on 2013 and $2 million in 2014, Kolb has a $250,000 roster bonus in 2013 and a $1 million roster bonus in 2014.? That $1.25 million could be tied to Kolb being on the active game-day roster or other factors that may not occur, even if he?s on the team.

Dropbox For Teams Gets Dropped In Re-Branding To Reflect ?Business? Focus

dropboxbizlogoDropbox is renaming Dropbox Teams to better reflect its change in business focus. The move comes in tandem with Dropbox’s new support for single sign on (SSO) and partnerships with Okta and other identity providers. Dropbox for Business will replace the old name, reflecting the company’s change in focus to be more on larger business customers than teams within organizations. In particular, this means support for Active Directory (AD), the traditional mechanism companies use to authenticate and manage an employee’s corporate identity. Businesses of any size demand built-in security, and AD has historically served as the standard as it eliminates the user name and password model for SSO. Dropbox customers will get all the capabilities that come with AD, including setting permissions, revoking access or adding people from the IT admin panel. As part of the news, Dropbox has pre-integrated with identity management companies: Okta, Ping Identity, OneLogin, Centrify, and Symplified. Centrify CEO Tom Kemp said that Dropbox is different because of its massive install base and usage. More and more users are bringing DropBox into work. ? But corporate IT/security is concerned that sensitive / confidential information is being stored in the cloud without proper security controls and access rights being applied, and they have no visibility into this. ?If they say no to dropbox, then users will just skirt IT. ?So having a solution such as Centrify integrate Dropbox with AD means that (a) users can use the solution they are comfortable with in terms of sharing docs etc.; (b) IT can put in the access control and security rights (who can access what) that they require; and (c) IT can leverage an existing mgmt tool / infrastructure they already own (AD) so they can implement this control / visibility without having to learn yet another tool. So Centrify + AD + Dropbox is a win – win for users/consumers and corporate IT. Each of these identity providers are in a mad dash to bake in their SSO capabilities with big customers. Dropbox has some penetration into the business market, claiming it is in 95 percent of Fortune 500 companies. The company says it counts a customer when it has three or more people using the service. Is that credible? It’s tough to know without breaking down the numbers. In the background of this is a land grab for the backend, something we are seeing a lot of

'Apprentice' stars diss Donald Trump's wife

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

If you ask Donald Trump's wife, Melania -- this week's "Celebrity Apprentice" client and judge -- both All-Star teams are losers.

Both Power and Plan B made major blunders in their assigned task: designing an ad campaign for Mrs. Trump's new skin-care line, Melania Caviar Complexe.

NBC

Dennis Rodman, right, and Trace Adkins in the boardroom on "Celebrity Apprentice."

But project manager Dennis Rodman was fired after Team Power misspelled their client's name at the top of their advertorial: "Simply Milania." ?

Oops.

Although the beleaguered basketball star called the typo a "minor mistake," Mr. Trump considered it "the ultimate error" and gave him the boot. Not without regret: Both the business tycoon and his daughter, Ivanka, had nothing but respect for the "comeback player of the year."

Still, the decision was a no-brainer: Was Trump really going to fire Trace Adkins? Only the country superstar returned to the boardroom with Rodman, because he designed the misspelled advertorial.

Adkins, clearly horrified by the mistake, blamed the graphic designer (whom he condescendingly referred to as a "little girl") for typing the erroneous text -- and especially Rodman for signing off on it.

But Melania was also extremely displeased by Plan B's project manager, Penn Jillette. After devoting 10 years to develop the product, she bristled when he mischaracterized her as the "spokesperson." Ouch.

Nor did Rodman and the Plan B's resident clown, Gary Busey, help their teams' cause with their bizarre behavior. In the initial meeting with his client, Rodman proposed a trip to her bathroom to confirm that she actually uses her own product.

Busey, the king of cringe, was virtually pushed out of the boardroom by his teammates after his endlessly enthusiastic tribute to Melania's beauty and "secret miracle" moisturizer.

Fortunately, his other comment was said outside of Mrs. Trump's hearing: "Have you ever had your genitalia so excited that it spins like a Ferris wheel on a carnival ride? That's how beautiful she is."

And with Plan B's fourth consecutive win, the Oscar nominee's bizarre reign will continue for at least another week.

Did Dennis Rodman deserve to go home? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Carnival cruise group expands in Asia | The Raw Story

By Agence France-Presse
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 10:07 EDT

?

Carnival, the world?s largest cruise group, unveiled its Asian expansion plans on Tuesday, predicting the regional market for leisure voyages will grow dramatically within the decade.

Southeast Asia in particular will be a key focus, the company said as it announced that one of its brands, Princess Cruises, will operate from Singapore by next year to provide short-haul leisure trips.

?Carnival is really investing a lot in Asia, we are trying to stimulate the demand of the market. Today it?s a bit quiet as cruising is not well known,? Pier Luigi Foschi, chairman and chief executive of Carnival Asia, told AFP.

?Southeast Asia is a key market to develop cruising because it is a year-round experience. The seas are typically calm and the surroundings are beautiful, particularly for short-haul cruises.?

Carnival?s brands include Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Ibero Cruises, P&O Cruises in Australia, and P&O Cruises in Britain.

Foschi, speaking on the sidelines of a press conference, cited industry forecasts that cruise liners will see a total of seven million passengers a year by 2020 in Asia, up from just above one million now.

The Sapphire Princess will be deployed to Singapore from November 2014 to February 2015.

The luxury liner, which can carry 2,670 passengers, will bring travellers from Singapore to cities and exotic destinations in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Carnival already has a presence in China through its Costa Cruises brand, while Princess Cruises is setting up shop in Japan this month.

?As cruise lines are being deployed into the market, the market starts to develop. Slowly at first, but then they reach a critical mass,? Alan Buckelew, chief executive and president of Princess Cruises.

?Our ships move to where we believe the demand is strongest.?

Singapore, a regional aviation hub, has also taken steps to gain a bigger slice of the growing cruise travel market.

In October, it opened a new cruise terminal capable of berthing the world?s biggest luxury liners.

Seattle police chief to step down amid reform efforts

By Eric M. Johnson

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Seattle's police chief, who had been tasked with shepherding court-monitored reforms as the force works to rebuild its public image, said on Monday he had planned to retire after a three-year tenure.

John Diaz, a 33-year veteran of the Seattle police department and its police chief since 2010, will step down in May and be replaced on an interim basis by Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel.

Diaz, who said he had always planned to retire this year, had faced a delicate balancing act trying to reconcile often competing demands from the mayor and the police department.

"It's been a very long career," Diaz said.

Diaz's resignation comes at a pivotal time for the force in Washington state's largest city, which averted a federal civil rights lawsuit by agreeing last year to reform its tactics in a plan overseen by an independent, court-appointed monitor. Diaz, a Latino, was to be a steward of the reforms.

The Justice Department concluded in a 2011 report that Seattle officers had displayed a pattern of using excessive force between 2009 and April 2011. In one high-profile case in 2010, officers shot and killed an inebriated Native American woodcarver.

"The department is poised to move forward at this point," Diaz told a news conference with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn on Monday. "Our reform efforts are in place, our structure is in place."

Seattle police are operating under a reform plan that covers use of force, police stops and work bias. The Justice Department report said there were deficiencies in oversight, policies and training for officers on how and when to use force in the Pacific Northwest city.

Last month, a federal judge approved an outline for early reforms, such as officer training.

In 2010, Diaz replaced former Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske, now the Obama administration's drug czar. McGinn said the search for Diaz's replacement would likely take months.

"It's been a challenging and turbulent time for our Seattle police department," McGinn said, but he added that Diaz's "achievements have been considerable."

McGinn said major crime was down since Diaz took the helm and was now at a 55-year low.

Pugel, the assistant chief of the Criminal Investigations Bureau, has held posts in various divisions including homicide.

The Power And Weakness That Come With Being The Default

screenshot_choosewisely_previewFacebook had its big coming-out party for mobile on Wednesday, and its Home launcher will soon start shipping exclusively on an HTC device. This is the social network’s first crack at being the default experience on any device. Until now, using Facebook has been a completely optional and background experience, meaning you’d have to visit its website or download one of its apps. After nine years, that approach worked rather well, to the tune of over a billion users. To get to the next level, Facebook had to start dipping its toes into uncharted territory…being the default. Creating a situation where you are the default, out-of-the-box experience certainly has many advantages. For example, HTC is putting all of its marketing power behind the HTC First, and Facebook probably didn’t have to pay a dime for any of this. The phone manufacturer is hoping that even though this isn’t a true “Facebook Phone,” that the fantasy of it being that, along with a manageable $99 price tag, will be enough to sell a slew of them. AT&T is certainly helping the cause on their site with this massive advertisement, which is of course what you see by default when you surf there: On April 12, when people start opening their new devices, they will see a Facebook screen asking them to log in. Yes, Facebook has reached default status. If for some odd reason the person with the phone doesn’t have a Facebook account, they can simply sign up for one. Sounds crazy, but there are still many people without a Facebook account and might not have had a reason to have one before. They might have never had a smartphone before either, which means that the Facebook Home experience will be their guide. The importance, and potential negatives involved, cannot be overstated. The Power Of Default Talk to Microsoft about defaults. It worked quite well for its Internet Explorer browser until it got them into hot water. We’ll get to the hot water later, but Internet Explorer was a beast, because it shipped as the only browsing experience for Windows machines. Was it the best web browser out there? For a while, yes it was. Installing another browser used to be seen as something only really geeky, or adventurous, people would do. I remember tweaking my old Windows machine every chance I could get, downloading any other interface to the

(AP) ? Hundreds of angry Egyptian Christians have gathered at the main Coptic Orthodox cathedral in Cairo for the funeral of four fellow Christians killed in weekend clashes with Muslims.

A fifth person, a Muslim, died in the Saturday clashes in the town of Khosoos north of the capital Cairo.

Denouncing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, the mourners on Sunday chanted "Leave!" and "This is our country, we will not leave."

Women in mourning black joined the chants, while clergymen sat silently before the service began.

Egypt's Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of the country's estimated 90 million people. They have long complained of discrimination by the state.

The presidency and the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which Morsi hails, condemned the violence.

Magix Movie Edit Pro 2013 Plus

Magix makes some of the most popular video editing software in Europe, and it has a smaller but devoted following this side of the pond.? The Movie Edit Pro 2013 version debuts a few interface changes such as combining video and audio tracks, adds support for the new AVCHD 60p format, enables multi-cam video shoots, and gets a speedup through performing more operations on your PC's graphics processor. The software has been a leader in introducing 3D video editing to consumers, but it's fallen behind its U.S. competition, Adobe Premier Elements, Corel VideoStudio, and CyberLink PowerDirector in offering any really forward-looking new features like support for 4K footage. Nevertheless Movie Edit Pro is a capable and mostly intuitive enthusiast-level video editing app.

Install
Movie Edit Pro (not to be confused with Magix's actual pro software, the $399 Video Pro X5) installs on Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP. A separate free Windows 8 new-style app called Movie Edit Touch is also available. Mac users, as is the case with many pro-sumer-level video applications, are out of luck. A trial version of the program delivers full functionality for 30 days, after which you can pay for a license and activate the app without having to re-install. Three editions of Movie Edit Pro suit different users' needs: The $69.99 base edition is geared toward beginners who want wizards that automatically create their productions; it's limited to 32 tracks, and lacks the higher-end editions' multi-cam support and advanced color correction.

The Plus edition adds those capabilities, while also upping the track limit to 99. The Premium edition adds advanced effect packs from NewBlue, digieffects, and ProDAD. I was disappointed to see that the installer added a browser toolbar and a system cleaning utility to my PC by default; only if you choose Custom installation can you uncheck these extras, which you probably don't want?I sure don't.

Interface
The pleasing dark look of Movie Edit's main window hasn't changed much since my last review of the program. The Welcome dialog is less extensive than that of competitors like Corel VideoStudio, with simple options to watch an intro video, create a new project either from scratch or from a template, or open an existing video project. An Options dropdown adds choices for directory location and video and audio formats.

The standard three-panel interface has video preview and source areas on the top, and a timeline area extending along the whole bottom half of the window. It's a flexible interface, in that you can pull out each panel into its own window by dragging its top border, and each can be full-screened. Movie Edit Pro is less modal than Corel and Adobe's competing apps, which take you through the workflow from import to output. Buttons on the far top right, however, do offer Edit, Burn, and Export options.

The timeline area also can alternatively display a storyboard of your movie's clips, and this view offers more than most competitors' equivalents: Icons for text, sound volume, and transitions let you perform those actions. Moving around in and zooming the timeline seems natural using the mouse wheel. You can also easily drag-and-drop clips to different tracks and positions. I do wish the video preview pane had a pause button, since hitting stop takes you to the beginning of the clip.

The preview window does show the time value for the playhead position and total clip time along its top border; this took me a while to find, but these programs have to show so much info that I can't ding it because I was expecting this info to be near the playback controls. A Show Time context menu choice lets you overlay the preview with a big red timecode. Another preview window peeve is that there's no clear way to switch between previewing the current source clip versus the movie.

Import
The source panel's Import tab just shows PC folders; to import from a device, you hit the Record button under the video preview panel. Record options include AVCHD, HDV camera, DV camera, analog TV input, Audio, and even the screen?this last is a nice extra, saving you the cost of a separate screen cam program. You can also just capture a single frame from these sources. One thing I look for in a media-editing app like this?since you work with still images and audio as well as video clips?is an easy way to filter the source view to just photos or just video files. The Magix software doesn't give me this the way competitors like Adobe Premiere Elements do.

Basic Video Editing
Most trimming in Magix is done right on the timeline, with a razor icon for splitting, which can be switched to "Remove start," "Remove end," or "Split movie" functions.? For more precise edits, the Edit trimmer lets you fine tune a transition between clips, and the Object Trimmer window lets you do so for the start and end of a single clip. The dialog for both these activities is fairly complex, with three panels and no fewer than 25 control buttons, but I can see how, after getting accustomed to it, it could be useful.

In Movie Edit Pro, transitions are called "fades" and there's no search for them. A couple of the groups of fades weren't available to me?Effect, 3D Series, and Movement. But for your 3D projects, 10 Stereo fades are on offer. As in most good software these days, you can drag a clip's corner to produce a cross dissolve transition?the most commonly used kind.

Instant Movie Making
Choosing "Use movie template" from the welcome screen offered me just one choice, Blockbuster, but you can download 17 more, with topics like Action, Film Noir, and Winter Wonderland, for free from within the program. This is reminiscent of Apple iMovie's Trailers features, which has you insert clips of certain types of shot (close up, group, action, and so on) into template slots. As with a lot of features in Magix, a dialog asked me to authorize features like H.264 licensing before I could use this. But as with iMovie's trailers, the results are quite fun and engaging.

Two more instant-movie-making tools are available: "Travel Route Animation" wizard, which places your movie on a map, and Slideshow Maker. The latter's templates add transitions and background music, and it lets you use video clips, so it can really be considered as an instant movie-making feature. Slideshow Maker let me customize the transitions, effects, title text, and background music, and even save my customizations as a new template.

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Spring may have sprung two weeks ago, but believe us, it's still winter somewhere. (Ed note: I'm typing this from underneath an NVIDIA Snuggie -- Dana.) In fact, Darren's had a reason to test out some touchscreen-friendly gloves, even in his southerly state of North Carolina. Up north, our own Jon Fingas has been playing with the Lumia 620 on Canada's Telus networks. No complaints from him about the 40-degree temps, though.

(AP) ? It's good to be Rick Pitino these days.

Top-seeded Louisville is playing for the national championship, giving Pitino a chance to be the first coach to win titles at two different schools. His son, Richard, is the new Minnesota coach. One of his horses has a spot in the Kentucky Derby after coming from behind to win the Santa Anita Derby.

Oh, and Monday morning, the Hall of Fame will make it official, announcing Pitino as one of its newest inductees.

"You take it in stride," he said Sunday. "I try not to ever get too low. I fight adversity as hard as I can fight it, not get too low. When good things happen, I don't really embrace it. I just say it's a lucky day."

The Cardinals (34-5) play fourth-seeded Michigan (31-7) on Monday night, with Louisville an early 4 1/2-point favorite.

Pitino has come a long way from the brash coach who led Kentucky to the national title in 1996. A long way, even, from the coach whose buttoned-down reputation was left in tatters following an extortion case four years ago that exposed the messy details of his private life. He's learned humility late in the game, and he ? and his players ? are all the better for it.

"If I had one regret in life, it wouldn't be what you think," Pitino said. "It's that I wasn't more humble at an earlier age."

The comeuppance began in Boston.

Pitino was the hottest commodity in college coaching when he went to the Celtics, following that '96 title and another trip to the championship game the next year. But assembling a college team is different than doing it in the NBA, and Pitino was 102-146 in three-plus seasons. The most lasting memory of his tenure was not a playoff run, but a postgame rant in which he chastised Celtics fans, "Larry Bird is not walking through that door."

He returned to the college ranks, taking the Louisville job in the spring of 2001. Six months later, his brother-in-law and best friend died in the Sept. 11 attacks, a loss that cut almost as deeply as the death of his infant son 14 years earlier.

And in 2009, he was forced to admit he'd had a sexual encounter with a woman who later tried to extort millions from him.

"I can give you some years where it went the other way," Pitino said Sunday when someone asked if he was leading a charmed life.

But the pain and humiliation ultimately served a greater purpose.

"For the first time in my life, I thought about maybe packing it in and doing something else three years ago," Pitino said earlier in the tournament. "I said, 'You know what, I'm not going to do that. I'm going coach as long as I can coach, but I'm going to make one big change. We're going to work just as hard as we've ever worked, if not more, but we're going to have a blast doing it.'

"It's worked very well."

Make no mistake, the temper is still there. In Saturday night's game against Wichita State, Pitino was lucky not to get teed up for as much as he was barking at the referees and stalking onto the court. He rips into walk-ons and starters alike, and his battles of will with Russ Smith are approaching campus legend.

But his criticism is no longer so biting, and there's affection beneath those barbs.

When he pokes fun at Smith ? a frequent occurrence ? Smith rolls his eyes and shakes his head. He refers to his team as family, and those aren't empty words, forward Stephan Van Treese said. His office door is always open, and even freshmen feel comfortable enough to go in and talk with Pitino about things large and small.

When Kevin Ware's tibia snapped, the bone protruding through the skin, during last weekend's Midwest Regional final, those were real tears Pitino had to wipe away. Though the team returned to Louisville that night, Pitino and Richard, who'd recruited Ware when he was an assistant to his father, stayed in Indianapolis to be with the sophomore.

With the youngest of his own kids not much older than his players, Pitino tries to stay current, too. He's a big fan of Pitbull, and knows enough about Twitter to tell his players to stay off of it. (He wasn't so familiar with Instagram, but Peyton Siva might have spoiled that one.)

"You always hear about him being hard on his players but, to me, he's a soft guy," Siva said. "He's still tough on us, but he's more enjoyable off the court. He seems more relaxed. He seems to have more fun with things. ... On the court he's the most focused guy ever, but off the court he's the most loveable guy ever."

It's no coincidence that Pitino's new outlook has translated into one of the best runs of his career. The Cardinals have won 30 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history, reaching the Final Four each year. The 34 wins this season is a school record, and the 15-game winning streak is the longest in a decade.

If Louisville wins Monday, the Cardinals would be the eighth school with three or more NCAA titles. Pitino would be the 14th coach to win multiple titles, but the first to do it at two different schools.

"We know what a single game means to coach Pitino, let alone the national championship," Siva said. "It would be a great milestone for him, but a great milestone for us, as well."

Pitino insists the personal accolades mean little. It may have taken a while, but he's learned the best things in his life and career are shared.

"Everything we do is about the team, about the family," Pitino said. "I want to win because I'm a part of the team."

(AP Photo/Susan Walsh, File)

(AP) ? The closings of control towers at 149 small airports, due to begin this weekend because of government-wide spending cuts, are being delayed until mid-June, federal regulators announced Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it needs more time to deal with legal challenges to the closures.

Also, about 50 airport authorities and other "stakeholders" have indicated they want to fund the operations of the towers themselves rather than see them shut down, and more time will be needed to work out those plans, the agency said in a statement.

The first 24 tower closures were scheduled to begin Sunday, with the rest coming over the next few weeks. Obama administration officials have said the closures are necessary to accomplish automatic spending cuts required by Congress.

Despite the delay, the FAA said it will stop funding all 149 of the airport towers, which are operated by private contractors, on June 15. Under the new schedule, the closures will be implemented at once, rather than a gradual phase-in as had been planned.

Airport operators in several states, including Florida, Illinois and Washington state, and the U.S. Contract Tower Association, which represents the companies that operate contract towers, have filed lawsuits with the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington seeking to halt the closures.

The suits contend that the closures violated a federal law meant to ensure major changes at airports do not erode safety, and unfairly targeted the program for an outsized share of the more than $600 million the agency is required to trim from its budget by the end of September.

"The administration has decided to make tower closures the poster child of sequestration (automatic spending cuts)," said the group's director, J. Spencer Dickerson. "We believe there are other ways they could have skinned this cat."

Federal officials have insisted that the closures wouldn't affect safety. And there is evidence that with improving safety, some of the closures would make economic sense.

It turns out that the FAA has been using 30-year-old data on aircraft collisions to justify the cost of operating many of the control towers, even though accident rates have improved significantly over that time.

Had the FAA used more current data, it's probable that some low-traffic airport towers operated by private contractors would no longer have met the agency's criteria for funding, industry officials say. But the FAA has long been under pressure from members of Congress to open new towers at airports in their states, not to close them.

The FAA began paying contractors to staff and operate towers at a handful of small airports after President Ronald Reagan fired striking air traffic controllers in 1981. Today, there are 251 towers operated by private contractors at airports across the country at an average annual cost of more than $500,000 each.

The closure plan is unrelated to the FAA's use of obsolete safety data to justify the contract tower program.

In 1990, the FAA developed a complicated cost-benefit methodology for the tower program that relies on accident data from 1983 to 1986 to determine how many accidents would be averted and lives saved if an airport had controllers working onsite. The safety data have never been updated, despite marked improvements in accident rates.

In 1983, there were 10.7 accidents for every 100,000 departures involving small planes, business jets and other non-airline flights in the U.S., according to the National Transportation Safety Board. By 2011, the latest year for which figures are available, that rate had dropped to 6.5 accidents per 100,000 departures. The commercial airline accident rate has also dropped, and fatalities have declined even more. There have been no passenger airline fatalities in the U.S. in more than four years, the longest period without fatalities since the dawn of the jet age half a century ago.

"None of the formulas have been updated since 1990, despite a very significant change in the aviation operating environment and the general aviation and commercial accident rates," the FAA said in a statement in response to questions from The Associated Press. "The FAA is in the process of updating this policy."

Agency officials offered no explanation for the oversight.

"The FAA methodology likely overestimates present-day collisions," the Congressional Research Service said in a recent report.

Initially the cost-benefit ratios were to be recalculated every two years, but that didn't happen, said David A. Byers, an aviation professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a consultant to the companies that operate the towers. If they were recalculated now, some airports would certainly fall below the FAA threshold for funding, he said.

Of the nation's 5,000 public airports, only about 10 percent have control towers. Those without towers generally have relatively few flights, and pilots coordinate takeoffs and landings among themselves.

Airport towers are prized by local communities as economic boosters, particularly in rural areas. Airlines are sometimes reluctant to schedule flights to airports where there are no on-site air traffic controllers.

Former Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., a critic of the contract tower program, said he refused to allow lawmakers to insert provisions into bills requiring the FAA to pay for new control towers at airports in their districts when he was chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

"We couldn't always stop it in all instances in the appropriations process, particularly when a bill comes from the Senate and it has a designation of funding for a particular tower," Oberstar said.

Researchers say 1 specific microrna promotes tumor growth and cancer spread

Thursday, April 4, 2013

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center have determined that the overexpression of microRNA-155 (miR-155), a short, single strand of ribonucleic acid encoded by the miR-155 host gene, promotes the growth of blood vessels in tumors, tumor inflammation, and metastasis. As a therapeutic target, miR-155 could potentially provide a new avenue of treatment when targeted with drugs to suppress its activity.

The study was published in an online issue of Oncogene in January.

MiR-155, which plays an important role in various physiological and pathological processes, is considered an indicator of poor prognosis for breast cancer patients when it is overexpressed. Controlling miR-155 expression could inhibit malignant growth, said the researchers.

"Our study shows that miR-155 is a driver of new blood vessel growth in tumors," said study lead author Jin Q. Cheng, M.D., Ph.D., senior member of the Cancer Biology and Evolution Program at Moffitt. "It also plays a critical role in metastasis, especially in triple-negative breast cancer. This makes miR-155 both a prognostic marker and a potential therapeutic drug target."

According to the researchers, several studies show that miR-155 is frequently increased in various human malignancies, including breast, lung, pancreatic and colon cancers. It also regulates a number of cell processes, including growth, survival, migration and invasion. Their study demonstrates that miR-155 promotes new blood vessel growth in breast cancer by targeting a natural tumor suppressor called VHL, part of an important cancer pathway for a cascade of events.

"Further studies could provide insight into the role of miR-155 in inflammation that leads to tumor progression," noted the researchers, who found elevated miR-155 in triple-negative breast cancer, a form of breast cancer that does not express the genes for estrogen, progesterone and human epidermal growth factor receptors.

"Our findings are important for a number of reasons," Cheng said. "We have shown that miR-155 targets and downregulates the tumor suppressor VHL and that miR-155 contributes to tumor growth and spread. This makes miR-155 a critical therapeutic target in breast cancer."

NFL Draft 2013: Chance Warmack could slide, according to Adam Schefter

While many pundits believe former Alabama guard Chance Warmack will be taken around the No. 10 pick, Adam Schefter believes he could fall a little further.

Many NFL Draft analysts project former Alabama offensive guard Chance Warmack to be selected somewhere around the No. 10 pick when draft day rolls around on April 25. However, ESPN's Adam Schefter believes Warmack could slip a bit. In a recent mailbag post for ESPN Insider, Schefter said Warmack might be available when the Dallas Cowboys select at No. 18.

A reader asked Schefter about the Cowboys' picks in the first and second rounds. In his reply, Schefter alluded to the possibility of Warmack falling down the board:

If Kenny Vaccaro somehow slid down to their spot and was available, that would be an ideal pick, Wilson. But so would a guard that fell to them. What if Alabama guard Chance Warmack is still around at that point in the draft? I know most people don't believe that will be the case, but it wouldn't be completely shocking based on some of the whispers around the league. However it plays out, Dallas could do a lot worse than coming away with a safety and a guard, drafted in either order, in the first two rounds of the draft.

Warmack is viewed by many as the best guard in the draft, which should make him a high priority for teams looking to improve their offensive lines. He has pretty good size at 6'2, 317 pounds, and considering he committed just two penalties during the 2012 season, he brings great discipline to his position. Plus, he's coming out of an Alabama program that has produced such recent NFL talents as Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Trent Richardson and Courtney Upshaw.

In his latest Mock Draft, ESPN's Mel Kiper projected Warmack going to the Tennessee Titans at No. 10. Over at CBS Sports, Pat Kirwan, Dane Brugler and Rob Rang have him going at Nos. 10, 11 and 12 to the Titans, San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins, respectively. However, CBS's Pete Prisco sees the Cowboys grabbing Warmack at 18.

In SB Nation's recent Mock Draft, the New York Jets selected Warmack at No. 9.

May the source be with you! 'Star Wars: Jedi Knight' code up for grabs?

Following the sudden ending of LucasArts yesterday and the ambiguous fate of all "Star Wars" games currently in development by the storied video game company, one fellow game company has already stepped up to show its solidarity with fans and gamers.

Just hours after news of LucasArts? imminent closure broke yesterday, Raven Software and its parent company Activision made the source code for their two "Star Wars" games, "Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast" and "Jedi Knight II: Jedi Academy,: freely available for players and the vibrant online modding community.

In a statement given to Kotaku Australia, Raven said that it wanted to release the source code "for people to learn from and play with.?

"Raven is sad to hear about the closing of LucasArts today, we respected them and enjoyed working with them over the years," the statement said. "We wish the best for all the talented people who were let go and hope they find good work in studios in the industry."

"We loved and appreciated the experience of getting to make Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for LucasArts," Raven said. "As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with."

Releasing a game?s source code is one of the best ways that a studio can extend the shelf life (at least culturally) of a video game by inviting in the creativity of the online modding community. Mods are essentially customized or converted versions of the original game that adds new content ? anything from new characters, weapons, levels, and storylines ? which can even amount to a new game entirely. "Counterstrike," for instance, which is one of the most popular first-person shooters ever created for the PC, was originally created as a mod for the first "Half Life."

So while Raven and Activision probably won?t be making any more money on "Jedi Knight" anytime soon, releasing the games? source code is good-will gesture that could even amount to a new game someday. In the meantime, modders and players can download the tutorial-free source code for "Jedi Outcast" and "Jedi Academy" on Sourceforge.

(AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry is traveling to Turkey and Israel this weekend to build on the two nations' efforts to repair ties, U.S. and Turkish officials said Wednesday.

Kerry had planned to depart next week for meetings in London and then South Korea, China and Japan. But he moved up his departure to Saturday to build on the rapprochement that President Barack Obama brokered between Turkey and Israel during his visit to the region two weeks ago, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the trip had not been announced.

Kerry will also discuss regional concerns, including Syria and the Mideast peace process.

Turkey and Israel were once strong allies, but relations have been badly strained since Israel's 2010 raid on a Turkish flotilla bound for Gaza that left eight Turks and one Turkish-American dead.

Last month, Obama helped broker a call from Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which Netanyahu apologized for the botched raid.

Turkey had demanded an apology as a condition for restoring ties. Netanyahu had until then refused to apologize, saying Israeli soldiers acted in self-defense after being attacked by activists.
